BREAKING: IRS FIRE System Retirement Confirmed 2027

Since the IRS IRIS System was announced, we knew that the IRS FIRE system retirement was near. We got confirmation that the FIRE system will be phased out sooner than many hoped.

IRS FIRE System Retirement

During the monthly IRIS Working Group meeting, it was confirmed that the FIRE System Retirement is near. This is currently planned for Filing Season 2027.

Due to this, it is imperative that users make the switch as soon as possible from FIRE to IRIS.

Transition from FIRE to IRIS

If you haven’t already, the IRS is encouraging everyone to make the switch ASAP. This will help users get accustomed to the new system before they are forced to use it indefinitely.

Here is what may be needed:

  • Apply for an IRIS TCC
  • A2A Users: Obtain an API Client ID
  • Purchase software from an IRS approved 3rd party e-file vendor or develop software using the schema package
  • Submit IRIS Assurance Testing System (ATS) transmissions

AIR Retirement

Although we know that the IRS AIR System will also be retired soon and all forms transitioned to IRIS, we still have no confirmation of when that will be.

Key Takeaway

The IRS has confirmed the upcoming FIRE System retirement for Filing Season 2027. Due to this, filers should begin to transition to IRIS now to avoid disruptions during tax season. Although there is no set date for the AIR System retirement, it’s clear that the IRS wants to transition everything to the IRIS system. Preparing early for these changes is the best way to stay in compliance.
